The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) recognises the significant impact of the European Union's Renewable Energy Directive (RED) on forest management, biomass production, and renewable energy. Our position reflects a balanced approach to ensuring environmental sustainability, and protecting biodiversity, worldwide.
FSC is aware that the European Commission may recognise a scheme as RED compliant. While, for the time being, FSC has chosen not to apply for RED recognition, we note that national competent authorities can accept a non-recognised scheme as sufficient evidence of compliance if they are confident of the scheme’s quality.
FSC's commitment to responsible forest management and sustainable biomass sourcing is underscored by third-party evaluations. A recent guide by Carbon Direct highlights FSC's certification as often going further than other standards and regulations in terms of ecological and social criteria, as well as outcome-based performance measures. This independent recognition affirms FSC’s position as a trusted leader in promoting sustainable forest management practices globally.
FSC acknowledges the ongoing debates and concerns raised by NGOs, scientists, and civil society regarding the sustainability of forest bioenergy. We are committed to engaging transparently with all stakeholders to address these challenges.
